Business leaders discuss skills for future generations

Posted: Updated:

Business leaders spoke about some of the skills they're looking for in hiring future employees at a roundtable on Thursday.

The roundtable was hosted by the Western Virginia Workforce Development Board Youth Council at the Roanoke Higher Education Center. Panelists included people from local businesses such as Advance Auto Parts, First Citizens Bank, and United Health Group. They stressed how important it is to go to career fairs, get internships, and network.

And while having skills like using the computer and being knowledgeable about the Internet counts, some businesses say what they look at most is how well people communicate.

"As we talked about during the panel session the idea of being able to communicate well both verbally and written and the idea of working together as a team," says Wayne Strickland, Executive Director of Roanoke Valley- Alleghany Regional Commission.

Strickland also recommends that parents start talking to their kids early on what they want to do in life. He says that third to fifth grade would be a good time.
