Reasons why Cove Road sinkhole is taking a while to repair

Posted: Updated:

A sinkhole at the corner of Peters Creek road and Cove Road continues to impact drivers in Roanoke.

It formed back last month in the aftermath of heavy rain and flooding.

City leaders say a 6 foot pipe under the ground is causing the problem.

The rush of water from the flooding put an extreme amount of pressure on the pipe causing water to escape and then basically explode up and washed away the road. They say the last thing they want to do is make a cheap and easy fix and then just end up with the same problem down the road.

That's still not helping people in the community, who say they have to deal with the frustration of trying to get down the road every day.

"The traffic its congested," Sandra Saunders who works near the construction says. "A lot of people have to come through this lot to get back on to Hershberger Road. So, I'm sure that the store's here, they see a lot of traffic coming through that parking lot.'

Some of you asked said why you haven't seen anyone working on the road recently. Crews tell us they had to come up with a sturdy repair design before continuing.

You may not actually see the crews on top of the road because many of them are under the ground working on the pipe.

The good news is they expect to be done repairs with repairs and have the road back open by Friday August 23rd.
