New Wythe County neighborhood to help low income families

Posted: Updated:

It's less than three miles from Interstate 81, only a mile from Fort Chiswell High School, and the view can't be beat.

It's the future home of Long Meadows neighborhood.

By the fall of 2015 this space will be filled with 23 homes, 18 of them are reserved for low income families.

"It's exciting to see it. To finally come up and just have the vision start to come alive," said Kathi Mineer, the Home Ownership Director for Helping Overcome Poverty's Existence (HOPE).

The Wytheville based non-profit helps low-income families buy affordable homes, and Long Meadows is the latest project.

A $270,000 federal grant made it a reality.

While the project is helping families in need, Wythe County spokesperson Jeremy T.K. Farley said it's also helping taxpayers.

"We're gaining new homes on the land and we're having progress on this area," Farley said. "Once this area is complete we're looking at tax revenues in excess of $10,000 per year."

Construction on the first home begins in just three weeks.

"Now that we've got the water in, utilities will be in the next couple of weeks," Mineer said. "We actually have two signed contracts ready to go so we're really anticipating this to go and go quickly."

Prospective homeowners must reach a certain threshold financially to qualify.
