GILES COUNTY, VA -

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is giving more than two-million-dollars worth of contracts to seven small businesses around the nation.

NanoSonic Incorporated in Giles County designs and manufactures innovative materials. It was recently awarded $300,000 from the EPA to establish new technologies to help protect our health and the environment.

"The goal of NanoSonic and a lot of our technologies is to bring jobs to southwest Virginia," said Vince Baranauskas, the NanoSonic Chief Technology Officer.

Hundreds of jobs could be on the way.

NanoSonic developed a new technology for insulating foam to be used in buildings. The money will be used to further test, produce and integrate the new technology.

"The foams that are currently used have been around since the 70s so that's three decades worth of technology were hoping to displace," said Baranauskas who says the new foam is better for your health and could help during a fire.  "It's nearly VOC free. During the spray process that you don't have the concerns of indoor air pollutants and on top of that it's highly fire restrictive and fire retardant so in addition to insulation you have something that won't burn or contribute to a fire but rather help choke it out by eliminating a fuel source."

"Our goal for next summer is to produce enough of these materials to get them approved by local building inspectors to introduce the technology here locally and then once the technology spreads we would envision making a lot more this material," said Jennifer Lalli, the NanoSonic president.

This new technology is now being developed into new things like this archery target when you put an arrow in you can easily pull it out and it has self-healing technology.

"Once we scale the materials up and take them to the next level we will be basically supplying jobs to Giles County," said Lalli.

Providing 100-500 new, local jobs if the technology catches on.

The following companies received 2013 EPA Phase II contracts:

•    Synanomet, Little Rock, Arkansas
•    GVD Corporation, Cambridge, Massachusetts
•    Aerodyne Research, Billerica, Massachusetts
•    Okeanos, Covington, Kentucky
•    Fluidic MicroControls, Savanna, Illinois
•    NanoSonic, Pembroke, Virginia
•    Electron Energy Corp, Landisville, Pennsylvania

"EPA's dedication to supporting small businesses is spurring green jobs and leading to sound, creative environmental solutions," said Lek Kadeli, principal deputy assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Research and Development. "The number of ever-increasing green products in today's marketplace will help the nation meet its environmental and human health goals, while also encouraging green economic growth."
