North Carolina's largest water utility wants to raise its rates. Aqua North Carolina supplies water to more than 60 percent of traditional customers in the state, and hundreds of neighborhoods in Wake County alone.
Under a rate hike request filed Friday, the average customer would pay an extra $10 per month.
This would be the third rate hike in five years.
Aqua's president said the hike is necessary to recoup the money the company spent on new service lines and pumps.
Public hearings on the rate increase will happen in the fall.
According to its website, Aqua serves more than 250,000 residents in 53 counties, including Wake, Durham, Johnston, Cumberland and Orange.
