Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Starts Its Fourth Year

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE -

It's the beginning for the first year students at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The school has more than 160 students from around the country, but it's a sight some fourth year students are still adjusting to seeing.

"When we first started there were no books in the library and now we have a full library," says Christopher Vieau, fourth year student. "We had this whole school we kind of played around with."

Vieau started in 2010 and he'll be part of the school's history as the first graduating class. Upperclassmen have helped mentor new students by giving advice, and it's something he didn't have.

"It becomes kind of a family when sometimes you can't stand your brother or sister but sometimes it's like they're all you have," says Vieau.

Although Vieau has gotten adjusted to life in Southwest Virginia, first year student Silpa Thaivalappil says she's been impressed by the landscape and people in the few days since she's arrived.

"The people are very different here and have been very welcoming whereas in D.C. they're more focused on getting to where they need to go," says Thaivalappil.

Many of the students say they chose Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine because of its smaller class sizes and faculty. For some of the students it's their first time coming to this area and they're looking to trying new things in Roanoke.

"I never learned how to ride a bike and so I've been offered by some classmates to ride a bike so I'm hoping to learn that," says Thaivalappil.
