Bucket hats define this camp

Posted: Updated:

If there is one item that defines the Redskins early morning walk-through practices, it is what they are wearing.

It's a floppy, white, wide brimmed hat officially called a bucket hat, and here at Redskins camp, it's on every fan's bucket list.

Redskins receiver Josh Morgan, told us he wasn't sure where the trend came from, other than the guys in the secondary. He said he thought it might be a "DC thing," but one thing is certain, he was wearing one.

By Thursday morning, the seventh day of the camp, the $30 hats had sold out.

Diamone Vincent, a cashier at the Redskins store, told me that, customers, "are really mad."

William Giovannetti a Redskins fan was one of those who was disappointed. "We came in here looking for the bucket hats, we found out the whole team was wearing them."

P.J. Edmonds, his friend echoed those thoughts. "I hope they get some back, maybe by Saturday they'll get some in."

And then, while we were standing there, 72 new bucket hats arrived. They started selling right away.

Wesley Spady bought one immediately.

Carlin: Did you ever thing the bucket hat would be the thing?

Spady: No I wouldn't at all. I would think more like the RGIII Stuff would be selling out more than these bucket hats.

No one really knows where the bucket hat phenomenon started. The Redskins store manager says they've been reasonably popular, but sales took off when players started practicing in them. Throughout the week more and more of the players were showing up in them at morning walk-throughs, which don't include helmets and pads.

But not all the fans wear them for the same reason. I asked Betty Hanger, a die hard, gray-haired fan who would look more at home in her garden than at ‘Skins camp.

Carlin: So it wasn't your goal to look like DeAngelo Hall?

Betty Hanger: No. (laughs) Not today anyway. (laughs again)

The fan turnout on Friday morning was significantly larger than earlier in the week. Probably because people can justify taking off on Fridays. The Redskins store was packed shoulder to shoulder and as you can imagine the second round of bucket hats sold out "in the first five minutes" an employee told me.

Saturday is fan appreciation day. Crowds are going to be larger than ever. Either the ‘Skins will come up with more bucket hats, or there will be thousands of disappointed fans.
