Concerns proposed propane gas terminal in SE Roanoke will affect greenway, schools, and neighborhoods

Posted: Updated:

People in Roanoke City are voicing concerns about a proposal to re-zone an area near their neighborhood for a propane gas terminal.

A Missouri-based company called Inergy wants to put $3.6 million into the project, but it's where Inergy wants to put the terminal that has community members up in arms.

If approved, it would be located near several neighborhoods, a school, and the Roanoke Greenway.

Anna Bond is worried her daily walk on the greenway near her home in southeast Roanoke is about to change.

After hearing about the proposal she says she wouldn't feel comfortable and she's not alone.

"It's just too dangerous to be in this area," Anna Bond says. People are concerned and upset."

"This is not a rural setting," Mark Powell, President Southeast Action Forum, says. "This is a very densely populated urban setting full of people and life."

Mark Powell, the President of Southeast Action, one of the neighborhood groups, says all you have to do is look at the images from the propane gas explosion in Florida last week and you should immediately understand their concern.

"We were asking questions about the safety guidelines and we learned this proposal operates under the same safety guidelines as explosion a facility in Florida operates under," Powell says.

Powell says the community is worried their property values will go down and insurance rates will go up. Plus, the propane facility is only a mile or two from Morningside Elementary School.

"There's only 4 or 6 jobs created through this proposal," Powell says. "We don't feel in measuring things up there is a benefit. There's too many risks and not enough benefits for the city."

Though, both Powell and Bond say they are thankful for the people who don't even live near the site that are showing their support.
