SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, VA -

Saturday. 2:45 p.m.

Police say they are searching for 74-year-old John Shoop at Smith Mountain Lake.

Sgt. Brian Young says they are treating this as a presumed drowning and are conducting active search operations.

Search efforts will continue for a couple of days until resources are exhausted.

Police say the depth of the water and the standing timber on the lake is causing a bit of a problem.

Police also ask that those who are boating to please stay away from the area as they continue their search efforts.

Police say they are looking for a missing person at Smith Mountain Lake.

Sgt. Brian Young says the search began around 5:30 Friday afternoon. The person was reported missing on the Roanoke river channel at Smith Mountain Lake at marker 2.

Crews searched until nightfall but the search has suspended for the night. Police say the search will continue at day light Saturday morning.
