CHRISTIANSBURG, VA -

A Radford man is currently hospitalized after stabbing himself during a traffic stop in Christiansburg.

Christiansburg Police say the 44-year-old rented a car from Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Christiansburg just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday and then drove over an embankment while attempting to leave the parking lot.

Police say he continued to drive away and was located minutes later by Christiansburg police officers in a parking lot near the intersection of Market Street and Arbor Drive.

Officers made initial verbal contact with the man and, believing he may be impaired, began preparing to conduct a field sobriety test.

Police say the man then pulled out a knife and stabbed himself in the stomach.

One of the responding officers utilized a TASER gun to subdue the man.

The man was taken to LewisGale Hospital Montgomery to surgery.  His condition is unknown at this time.

He has been issued a summons for driving under the influence.

The man's identity is not being released at this time in order to protect his privacy while further evaluations are conducted by medical professionals.

No officers were injured in the incident.
