Little girl makes big donation with lemonade stand earnings

AYDEN, N.C. -

One little girl in the east is trying to make a difference, one lemonade stand at a time.

Five-year-old Raelyn Jones set up a lemonade stand under the hot summer sun in downtown Ayden on Saturday, Aug. 3. While she helped people beat the heat, she had bigger plans in mind.

Earlier this week, Raelyn wished to be rich. When asked why, she told her mother that she wants kids without parents to be adopted and then wished she had a lot of money to give them a home.

She then set up shop, hoping to put a dent in her efforts by selling lemonade and orangeade.

"Well I raised a lot of money for the kids and did a lot of stuff for them and did a lot of money for them." Raelyn said.

"She's 5 years old and she's not even in kindergarten yet and it amazes me that somebody so little can think of something like this on her own." Bridgett Jones, her mother said.

By the end of the day, Raelyn raised $400.

And on Friday, Aug. 9, she hand-delivered the money to Pitt County's "Under Our Wings" foster and adoption program.

"On behalf of everybody, we all just say thank you to Raelyn and thank you to her family," said Mildred Daniels, a social work supervisor who accepted the money.
