Consumer Alert: Hurricane Sandy flood damaged cars

Posted: Updated:

If you are shopping for a used car there is a consumer alert you'll want to keep an eye on.

Hundreds of thousands of cars damaged from Hurricane Sandy are showing up in lots nationwide.

Flood-damaged cars are often dangerous to drive due to hidden problems like electrical and mechanical damage, along with damaged air bag systems.

Mold and bacteria can also build up, making it a health risk.

Here are some tips from Carfax.com... when looking at used cars.

Ask to see a cars history report.

Have your own mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection.

Trust your nose... meaning if you smell musty odors avoid it.

Bend some of the wires under the dashboard because wet wires become brittle once they dry and may crack.
