Virginia Tech tops sales of college license plates

Posted: Updated:

Hokie fans are buying more special license plates than any other college.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reports sales of three different versions of the Virginia Tech plate, including "Go Hokies," "Hokies" and the school seal total more than 18,000.

Nearly 70 Virginia organizations are receiving funds through the DMV based on revenue-sharing special license plate sales. The plates cost $25 in addition to vehicle registration fees.

Virginia Tech license plates raised more than $274,000 in revenue for scholarships, which university officials say go to in-state students.

Sales of the three Virginia Tech plates sell more than the combined total of all the other schools in the DMV's top 10, according to its registration report.
