So, is the rivalry – err, set of contests - between the
University of North Carolina and Duke University a rivalry or just friendly competition?
Forbes has a surprising answer.
The magazine looked at some of the rivalries in college sports to decide if they were rivalries (that is, they involve true hatred) or frenemies (someone you hate to love).
Duke-UNC? More on that in a minute. But Forbes apparently decided that the bitter rivalry between Williams College and Amherst College – you know, the one that lights up ESPN every year – is a true rivalry. Forbes said "games are intense and filled with tons of energy."
Same thing with Hampden-Sydney vs. Randolph-Macon, a "rivalry" that Forbes says is marked by pranks.
Pranks? How about stealing the head of your rival and posting it on a pike on top of your Student Store? That's just what UNC did to Duke last year. But apparently, the rules are Forbes are not impressed.
Duke-Carolina, in their view, is a nice little battle between frenemies. Forbes wrote that "the two schools are collaborators in many ways." For example, students who are Robertson Scholars take classes at both schools.
So our question is, has anyone from Forbes been to the Duke-Carolina game? We'd love to get them tickets if we had them.
Hey, but maybe there are some extra seats at Williams-Amherst?
