UPDATE: Crossroads shooting victim identified, no arrests made

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

UPDATE: 3:50 p.m.

Roanoke Police have identified the victim of Thursday morning's shooting outside the K&W Cafeteria at Crossroads Shopping Center as 21-year-old Carlton Vaughn, an employee at the restaurant.  They say he was shot in the groin.

He's currently listed in good condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Investigators say as Vaughn was walking into work, a fight broke out in the parking lot -- then a black male suspect fired a single shot that struck him.

Police say they've received conflicting reports from witnesses regarding what happened and who was involved in the altercation.  They plan to release additional information about the suspect "when the information is substantiated."

A cartridge case was recovered from the scene.

No arrests have been made.

If you have any information about this crime, you are asked to call the Roanoke Police Department at (540) 853-5959 or Crime Line at (540) 344-8500.

UPDATE: 9:30 a.m.

Roanoke Police have cleared the scene of a shooting at the Crossroads Shopping Center on Hershberger Road.

Officials say just before 6:50am Thursday, they received a report of a shooting near the K&W Cafeteria.  When officers arrived on scene, they found a man outside the restaurant with a gunshot wound.

Investigators would not specify where the man had been shot, but said he was alert and talking when officers found him.  He was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  His name is not being released at this time and his current condition is unknown.

Police believe he walked over to K&W Cafeteria from across the street, which is why they had an area behind Rugged Warehouse blocked off with crime scene tape.  That area has since reopened.

No one is in custody.  The investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE: 8:48 a.m.

Roanoke Police say a call came in about a shooting at 6:49 a.m.. When they arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound outside and in front of K&W Cafeteria, said Roanoke Police Captain Monti Lee. They would not say where he was shot but that he was alert and talking. He was taken to the hospital. His name and condition have not been released.

Police blocked the parking lot behind the shopping center for some time, believing the victim walked from that direction before sitting down in front of K&W. No one is in custody at this time.

UPDATE 8:10 a.m.

The shooting happened behind Rugged Wearhouse across from K&W Cafeteria on Hershberger Road in Roanoke. Police have the area blocked with crime tape.
