Atlantic Hurricane Season to remain active

Posted: Updated:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued its revised forecast for the 2013 hurricane season.  Above average activity is expected to continue.

The forecast calls for 13 to 19 tropical storms with six to nine hurricanes.  Three to five of those are expected to become major hurricanes with winds over 110 mph.

These numbers are slightly below the old forecast which was 13 to 20 tropical storms, seven to 11 hurricanes with three to six major hurricanes.

A typical hurricane season brings 12 tropical storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

The numbers were lowered slightly due to the decreased likelihood for La Nina to reform and the lack of hurricanes in July.  Typically there is one.

Models are also predicting a lower number of tropical systems in the Atlantic.

Factors for increased tropical systems is warm waters remaining in the Atlantic basin with water temperatures up to 90 degrees.  Also, El Nino has not developed which increases winds that destroy tropical systems.
