Abduction suspect appears in court Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

Update 5:45 p.m.

The Nelson County Sheriff's Office confirmed Tuesday that Randy Taylor was caught on the same surveillance video as Alexis at the Liberty Gas Station in Lovingston on Saturday, August third.

That was the last time she was seen.

Update 5:18 p.m.

Randy Taylor's court-appointed attorney has been changed. The new attorney is Michael Hallahan.

Update 2:00 p.m.

A Nelson County judge appointed an attorney to represent the suspect charged with the abduction of 17-year-old Alexis Murphy.

Suspect Randy Taylor appeared in court Tuesday afternoon. He will be represented by public defender Scott DeBruin.

Taylor's next court date January 9, 2014 at 10 a.m. He is being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

Update 1:15 p.m.

We've learned Taylor has appeared in court himself. He was originally scheduled to appear via video link, but it didn't work.

Update 10:30 p.m.

We've learned Taylor is scheduled for an advisement hearing in Nelson County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The hearing was moved out of general district court because Murphy is a minor.

At a news conference in Nelson County, the family of 17-year-old Alexis Murphy pleaded for anyone who knows anything about the disappearance of their daughter to come forward.

Alexis' mother, Laura Ann Murphy, tearfully told news crews what it was like to drop her son off for his first day back at school. She says she would have been doing that with Alexis today too.

Commonwealth Attorney, Anthony Martin, also spoke. He says they continue to "hope Alexis will be returned to her family."

Martin says Sunday's afternoon's arrest of Randy Taylor, 48, is a significant step forward. Taylor is being charged with abduction in connection to the case.

While FBI agents are asking the public to come forward if they know or recognize Randy Taylor. People are asked to call Nelson County's Sheriff Office at 434-263-7050
