Mother: Missing Raleigh man may have been at shelter, soup kitchen

RALEIGH, N.C. -

About 60 people combed parts of downtown Raleigh on Tuesday looking for a Raleigh man who has been missing since the weekend, his mother told WNCN.

Becky Daly of Apex said the family has gotten word that Weston Vandemerwe, 23, may have been seen eating at a soup kitchen downtown. They have also heard he may have spent one night at a Raleigh shelter.

Vandemerwe was last seen around 1:30 a.m. Saturday near The Oxford bar on Fayetteville Street, not far from Memorial Auditorium.

Vandermerwe, a recent East Carolina University graduate, left The Oxford with his girlfriend, who said Vandemerwe had been drinking. Kaitlyn Holmes added that the two got into an argument outside the bar, which led to her leaving in a cab.

Holmes said the last she saw him, Vandemerwe was walking down the street.

"I just hope he's OK and comes home soon," Holmes said. "If anyone sees anything, please contact the police department -- please -- with anything."

Raleigh Police do not suspect foul play. But Daly said Monday that his disappearance was completely unlike him and she is convinced something is wrong.

"This isn't like him; he would be home," Daly said. "Something's happened, I don't know what. We need to know."

Vandemerwe was scheduled to sign a lease for a new apartment Sunday, but never showed up. He also did not show up for his financial services job on Monday.

Family members say Vandemerwe's car is at his friend's house.

The family is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to him being found. Family members describe Vandemerwe as being 5 feet 8 tall with brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a red, short-sleeved polo shirt with blue shorts and Sperry shoes.
