Greg Taylor, once an inmate, looks to life as a millionaire

RALEIGH, N.C. -

After spending 17 years of his life in prison, Greg Taylor has taken the opportunity to travel extensively since his release in 2010 after the Innocence Commission ruled he was not guilty of murder.

Among other places, Taylor's travels have taken him to the Dominican Republican.

On Tuesday, he learned he would receive a $4.625 million settlement. He was convicted of murdering a prostitute in 1993 and released in 2010.

"I think I could die happy if I was dying planning my next trip," Taylor said.

Asked what it is like to go from inmate to millionaire, Taylor said, "I don't know. 'Beverly Hillbillies' comes to mind."

Taylor said the amount of money has not sunk in yet. The state previously gave him $750,000 but the new millions came after he sued the State Bureau of Investigation and some of its agents for not revealing blood evidence that could have proven his innocence.

Asked if he was "satisfied" with the amount, Taylor said, "I try not to look at it like that. This to me is not representative of the time lost, but more the ability for the time ahead."

Asked about his plans now, Taylor said, "That's a hard thing for me to do, to make plans. That comes from living for so many years without being able to make plans. That part of my thought process doesn't really exist anymore."

But he said the money does give him the security to move forward -- and leave the 17 years in prison behind.
