Terriers Sport Talent, More Numbers

Posted: Updated:

At the home of the Terriers, they can only wonder what last season might have been like without a couple of key injuries. As it was, William Byrd turned in an up and down injury plagued  5-7 season--but still managed a playoff win.   They return senior skill position stars including a pair of 1000 yard rushers--and they sport bigger numbers this year. The JV/Varsity total in the past couple of seasons has only been around 50. This season it is more than 70.   And they also return one of the deans of high school coaching in SW Virginia.  Coach Jeff Highfill is second on the "longest tenured list" behind David Crist at Blacksburg. Highfill begins his 34th season at William Byrd High..Crist is in year 39 at Blacksburg.  Highfill explains that coaching is a lifelong passion, and he still enjoys working with young men. He says that it is probably because he remembers how influential his coaches were to him growing up--second only to his parents. And he knows he can have a positive influence on them in the game of life.
