Starkey Road bridge replacement complete

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE -

The recent 10-day closure of Starkey Road in Roanoke put a bump in the road for the estimated ten thousand people who drive that road everyday.

While it may have been a headache for drivers, replacing Starkey bridge was a priority. Built in 1932 the bridge was crumbling. VDOT spokesperson Jamie Smith says replacing it was a safety measure.

"It was definitely time for this bridge to be replaced. Age and deterioration, it was more cost effective to go ahead and replace the bridge than to continue to repair it."

On schedule Starkey Road opened back up Wednesday, a relief to the owner of Starkey Medical Esthetics Michelle Meinhart.

"You don't know when you are driving over it whether you are safe or not," Meinhart said.

The new bridge passed inspection Wednesday afternoon. Now safety is no longer a concern.

Now that the bridge construction is complete and Starkey Road is back open. Business owners like Meinhart are hoping this opens up more opportunities for businesses to come to this area.

"We are happy," Meinhart said. " We are definitely wanting to bring more attention to this end of Starkey Road because the county's plans from my understanding is to really try and develop this as a business area and so we are really happy to be expanding the area too."

The area is already zoned for small businesses like Starkey Medical Esthetics.

Meinhart hopes a new and improved safer roadway will bridge the gap for upcoming expansion.

Now that the bridge is complete the road is open back up, however, there will be minor road repairs in the coming weeks.
