Alexis Murphy's family says search mentally, physically, & financially draining, fundraisers to help

NELSON COUNTY, VA -

Almost 2 weeks have gone by and 17-year-old Alexis Murphy is still missing.

Her mother, Laura Murphy says she feels stuck on Saturday, August 3rd. It's the day her daughter stopped at the gas station before hoping to go shopping and then never came back home.

"We're just going to keep pushing and pushing and just keeping it out there on everyone's minds," Alexis' mother, Laura Murphy says.

It's hard to forget what this family is going through without their daughter.

People have started Facebook and Twitter accounts trying to support and reach out to this grieving family.

"I'm very humbled," Laura Murphy says. "This community has really come together and they have really been great to us and words just can't express how I feel."

Laura and Alexis' aunt Trina Murphy say it's been mentally, physically, and financially draining.

Both have stopped work to focus all their attention on the search for Alexis.

Laura usually works the overnight shift at a post office, 2 and 1/2 hours away, 6 days a week. It's to support her sons ages 8-years-old and 20-years-old, and Alexis

Some are hoping to ease the financial burden by selling $10 t-shirts that say 'Alexis Murphy We Love and Miss You.' They will be selling the shirts at a pre-season volleyball tournament Alexis would have played in on Saturday, August 17th. It starts 9:00 a.m. at Nelson County High School.  So far, 130 shirts have already been sold.

A local mother and family friend, Roxanne Carter Johnston, also started an account on Gofundme.com. It's called 'Supporting Souls for the Alexis Murphy Family.' Since, Wednesday the site has already raised more tan $1,200.

"It's very scary," Roxanne Carter Johnston says. "I just can't imagine not knowing where your child is and that just has to be the biggest hurt anyone could ever feel."

It's support the family says is much appreciated.

"Even though our lives have come to a screeching haut, the real word is still turning and they have real bills that need to be paid," Alexis' aunt Trina Murphy says. "What ever people feel like they can contribute, we are grateful and thankful for anything."

There's also a benefit cruise on Saturday, August 24th. It's being hosted by the Central VA's Street Elements Auto Club. The event will be on 'Ebony & Ivory Field' on 125 Robert Cabbell Lane in Roseland.
