Bhutanese Community in Roanoke Welcomes Dozens from East Coast

Posted: Updated:

In just three days, more than one-hundred people from Roanoke and the East Coast have gathered at a Bhutanese temple in Roanoke.

The religious ceremony is elaborately decorated in many bright colors and ornate art work from the Bhutanese religion.

The event is sponsored by the Bhutanese Community In Roanoke (BCR), a group that focuses on strengthening their religious community and partnering with other not for profits in the area to build community relations and understanding for their culture.

BCR president Nandi Mishra says the event is extremely important in their culture.

"The main purpose of this event is to create a friendship and a close niche among the neighborhood and people in different states," Mishra said.

BCR has been in place for five years. Mishra says it continues to grow.
