Students head off to college and boost local economy

RALEIGH, N.C. -

This week will see the first day of classes for many college and university students across the Triangle.

They spent the weekend moving in -- thousands of new and returning students packing dorms and spending money at local businesses nearby.

And many of those businesses, like ones near N.C. State's campus say student dollars are vital to their survival.

"The students are our business," said Marta Frazier, owner of Freshberry on Hillsborough Street, just off campus.

"When they left this year, it got really bad," she said of her frozen yogurt shop's drop in business.

It was so bad, in fact, for some nearby businesses that they had to shut their doors.

Down the street at Chile Bomba, a Mexican restaurant, business also spiked this weekend as students returned.

And its not just N.C. State providing the boost. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill was bustling this weekend, packed with students and their parents crowding eateries and shops.
