Longtime Raleigh Bishop remembered through prayer ahead of funeral

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The man who led the local Catholic church through three decades is being remembered through prayer Monday ahead of his funeral.

Regular prayer services at Sacred Heart Cathedral in downtown Raleigh Monday are dedicated to Bishop Joseph Gossman.

A viewing is being held throughout the day through the last prayer of the day at 10 p.m.

Bishop Gossman died last week at the age of 83.

He served as bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh for 31 years.

"He was a very unassuming man. His motto, every bishop has a motto, and his was, ‘To serve and not be served.' Very humble man. A very generous man," said Monsignor David Brockman.

"Even those who are not Catholic. So many people had so many wonderful interactions with him and have drawn great hope and strength from him and continue to do so even after he retired," he said.

A funeral mass is scheduled Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Parish at 804 High House Road in Cary.

A Rite of Committal and burial follows at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Cemetery at 211 Irwin Drive in Newton Grove.
