Church volunteers help keep Vinton pool open

Posted: Updated:

As the season comes to a close volunteers from local churches have made a difference at the Vinton pool for the fourth summer.

Volunteers from three different local churches, Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, Lynn Haven Baptist Church, and Vinton Wesleyan Church, rotate weeks manning the pool all day.

Without support from the local churches Vinton's special programs director, Mary Beth Layman, says the pool would have closed four years ago.

"It had already been discussed in budget session and decided and fortunately one of the staff members at Thrasher church recognized that it was going to be difficult to see such a positive activity not take place," said Layman.

"From our church, from my window I would watch kids every day during the summer walk across the road with the towels on their backs and I just thought you know we can't let these kids to stay inside and not have a place to swim," explained Tina Yates, Director of Christian Formation, Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church.

With volunteers giving time the money the pool has made went up 29-percent from 2009 to 2012.
