While Smith Mountain Lakes 50th anniversary is two years away, people who live there are getting a head start on planning the celebration.
Barb Nocera with Visit Smith Mountain Lake says the first meeting to plan the occasion is this week.
"The community needs to begin organizing and discussing how we would like to commemorate this important occasion," Nocera said.
"In addition to being a special historical celebration for those of us fortunate enough to call the lake home, 50th anniversary events can also have a strong positive economic impact."
Necora says the anniversary creates an opportunity to convey the compelling story of the lake's past, present and future to people from across the region and beyond.
The Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce plans to help facilitate and support the anniversary events.
The Chamber of Commerce is inviting the community to offer in their input. The first planning meeting will be Wednesday at the Westlake Library in Franklin County from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
