Camp teaches people with disabilities how to ride a bike

Posted: Updated:

iCan Shine bike camp travels the country teaching children and adults with learning disabilities how to ride a bike.

The camp is in Roanoke for the first time this week after Lea and Ginny Riddle, parents of a special needs child, came across the idea.

After months of planning, 30 riders are pedaling on two wheels with 80 volunteers helping out.

"A lot of times these kids have a hard time finding opportunities to exercise.  They have fear of falling down, they have balance issues, they have sensory issues, so a lot of times just sitting on the bike is one obstacle and the next obstacle is making a turn," explained Lea.

At the start of camp the bikes have rollers on the back to help riders work on improving their balance and the goal is to have all riders on two wheels by the end of the week.
