CHRISTIANSBURG, VA -

A local group is looking at ways to keep aging community members in their in homes longer.

The NRV Planning District Commission was leading a group looking into housing issues when it determined the New River Valley was aging. Specifically, it found the number of people 65 or older would double by the year 2030 yet a number of homes in the area are not suited for an aging population.

Thursday, nearly a dozen organizations will meet to come up with design solutions for making homes more life span friendly. They'll work together generating ideas to pass along to architects and builders. "They may want to take into account some simple designs features such as making their bathrooms wheelchair accessible," explained Kevin Byrd. "If they can do that they might be able to defer going to an assisted living facility in the future, was of keeping people in their homes and in their communities."

After the workshop, architects will develop prototype sketches based on what the group came up with that will be made available to the community. The design workshop will be held from 8:30n a.m. to 2:00 p.m. August 22. It was relocated to The Event Centre in Christiansburg after more than double the people expected signed up to attend.
