RALEIGH, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory tapped a 22-year veteran of the FBI to head up the Department of Public Safety.

Wednesday, McCrory named Frank Perry as his new secretary of the DPS. In March, McCrory appointed Perry as the interim secretary after McCrory accepted Kieran Shanahan's resignation.

"Frank Perry has dedicated his life to public safety, primarily through his distinguished FBI career," McCrory said. "He brings a wealth of real-world experience to the helm of DPS in addition to his dedication to public service."

Shanahan announced that he would leave his position to focus on his law firm. McCrory accepted Shanahan's resignation on July 25.

McCrory named Shanahan as secretary of Public Safety in December 2012.

Perry served 22 years with the FBI as a special agent. In addition, he's served as director of investigations for the state Office of the State Auditor and has worked with the N.C. State Ethics Commission.

At the FBI, Perry investigated white collar crime, corruption, violent crime and handled sensitive investigations.
