Record corps, number of women coming to VMI this fall

LEXINGTON, VA -

When the full corps of cadets returns to Lexington next week, they will be part of the largest corps in VMI's long and storied history.

1,729 men and women will be enrolled at the school during the upcoming fall semester.  The school had to install extra beds in the barracks over the summer to accommodate everyone.

The incoming freshman class is also making VMI history.  66 women are a part of the class of 2017 -- the highest number of women ever.  The previous record was 59 for the class of 2014.

"It's really cool to see that other women want to be here or have that drive to be here and want to make something out of themselves, whether it's in the military or the civilian sector," said Alyssa Ford, a senior at VMI.

The school points to its academic reputation and unique military learning environment as reasons for the increase.
