Life Center in Galax expands

Posted: Updated:
GALAX, VA -

Life Center of Galax expands on the eve of its 40th anniversary.

The facility has doubled the number of beds available for long term treatment.

Andy Eckert, CEO of CRC the company that owns Life Center of Galax says,"We have one hundred forty facilities across the country. Thirty of our facilities are similar to Life Center of Galax."

Eckert says alcoholism, heroin and prescription painkillers are three of the biggest challenges for people who participate in the program.

Bill Hannagan drove from North Carolina for the ceremony to highlight the facility's expansion. He first receive treatment for crack cocaine abuse in 2001 in Galax.

He says "This is where the seed of recovery began for me."

After years of off and on drug abuse Hannagan eventually successfully finished his therapy through FIRST at Blue Ridge, Inc. He now works in admissions for that therapeutic community. He says the two facilities work together to serve the needs of people who are fighting addiction.

Summer Alessie says, "Life Center of Galax saved my life."

Summer started abusing drugs when she was 12 years old. She was able to successfully stop using drugs through the Life Center and went on to get her bachelors degree. She is now a counselor for Life Center of Galax planning to pursue her masters degree.

For people like Hannagan and Alessie, the new expansion gives them hope and satisfaction of knowing someone else might be helped.
