NAACP rallying against closing of polling places in NC

DURHAM, N.C. -

The North Carolina chapter of the NAACP is planning to rally in counties across the state that have decided to close polling locations on college campuses.

Some counties have closed polling locations after the General Assembly approved new voter laws during the 2013 session.

The Watauga County Board of Elections voted Aug. 13 to eliminate an early voting site and election-day polling precinct on the campus of Appalachian State University.

The NAACP said the organization is researching what, if any legal actions can be taken against the local board of elections that have made changes.

On Aug. 28, the NAACP will rally in each of N.C.'s 13 congressional districts.

Rev. William Barber said the changes in polling sites are unconstitutional strategic attacks on student voting.

"It's a vulgar attempt to contrive ways to manipulate political outcomes for your own political person or your own partisan values," Barber said. "That is wrong. That is a crime against democracy."

Barber has called for Gov. Pat McCrory to meet with the leaders of the local boards of elections.

The NAACP has set up a hotline to report anything they may consider voter suppression. (1-855-664-3487 or 1-855-NO-ID-4-US)
