Blind Roanoke City student wins national art award

Posted: Updated:

A Stonewall Jackson Middle School student is the winner of a national art competition.

Jean "J.B." Bosco won the first place award in The American Printing House for the Blind Insights 2013 contest.

J.B. has overcome a lot of physical disabilities to put together an award winning piece of art.

A brain tumor has caused J.B. to lose his eye sight and created mobility problems for the eighth grader.

He actually started drawing in the first grade back in his native country, Tanzania.

"I draw in the floor," he said.  "Back then I was poor, I have no papers or pencils.  Back then in my country it was hard to get pencils, so I just go and drawn with my feet and fingers like that."

"It's really inspiring to see the amount of enthusiasm, because he has to work harder than anyone else," explained Tom Moore, J.B.'s art teacher.

The work J.B. put in paid off when he got the call his drawing of a glass of Kool-Aid won first place.
