BLACKSBURG, VA -

The Historic Lyric Theater in Blacksburg is celebrating its move to the digital age tonight with a special screening of Back to the Future.

The Lyric recently completed its transition to digital from film after years of planning and a quickly funded Kickstarter campaign that raised nearly $60,000. It cost more than $120,000 for the move, required by Hollywood. The Celebration of Digital Cinema will include an evening of refreshments and fun.

Kevin Cupp of Christiansburg will be there with his classic DeLorean. The car became iconic for its appearance in the 80s film. Cupp says he wanted one since he was six, after he saw the movie starring Michael J. Fox. Now he owns one. Cupp says he started saving for the car after he graduated from Virginia Tech.

He's always wanted the beloved Lyric to show the classic film but says he kind of gave up on the idea. Then he got he got the call about Friday's celebration and an invitation. "To see them upgrading their equipment to prepare for a future and have a better picture on screen is very exciting," Cupp said. "I'm very glad they chose to show one of my favorite movies and asked me to be part of the event. Out of the blue I get this email and say hey we're actually doing this and we'd like to show your car out front and I was like great, this is what I've been waiting for." Cupp's DeLorean will be parked on the promenade near the Lyric for all to see.

There will be a reception at 7:00 p.m. followed by the movie at 8. Tickets are $20/person, $35/couple and $10/children. The price includes hors d'oeuvres, soft drinks and popcorn. Buy tickets at the Lyric box office or at the door the night of the event.
