Officer Perkins Still Out of His House

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke police officer Patrick Perkins was flooded out of his house in July.

Back then we showed you how water filled his basement.

Now, it is stripped beyond the bare walls to the studs... But he can't re-build because the flooding won't stop.

Even after Wednesday night's relatively gentle rain, water keeps flowing in.

He's added sand bags outside to help divert the water, but unfortunately when the bags keep the waste rout on the surface, it simply seeps into the ground and comes in through the walls and the hole where his sump pump is easily overpowered.

In the meantime Perkins is still living in a camper beside the home.

"We have everything we need in here, cooking, shower, heat and air conditioning, but it's a long way from our two thousand square-foot house," he said.

It seems, ff it wasn't for bad luck Perkins wouldn't have any luck at all.  He lives on cul de sac with neighbors on either side, but when it rains the water finds only his house.

Perkins showed us video from his cell phone taken during a recent rain storm.

Here is the problem -- a nearby branch of Tinker Creek has been breached, and the water is flowing out of it directly to Perkins back yard. Perkins shows us his cell phone video in which he walks the overflow from the branch directly to his back yard.

He pointed to a low spot in the back of his neighbor's house.  "When it rains, this spot has 2-3 feet of water in it.  That's what's getting into my basement," he said.

What's not clear is whose fault it is that the nearby branch has been breached, and who is responsible for fixing it.  While Perkins is running down those leads, and living in a camper...

The money donated to his cause remains safely in the bank, waiting for the time when Perkins can restore the utilities -- such as hot water, and heating and cooling without the threat that they will once again be ruined by flood water.

The "Officer Perkins Relief Fund" has been set up at the Roanoke Valley Community Credit Union.

Checks should be made out specifically to that fund.
