Local driver prepares for race at VIR

Posted: Updated:

One by one drivers take their turn at practice at VIR Raceway.

More than twenty drivers will take part in the K&N Pro Series East Saturday including number 51, Michael McGuire who will be a junior at William Byrd high school when classes begin.

He says,"I start back next Tuesday. Hopefully I will bring home a trophy, who knows.

His father Tim and uncle Tony are among several family and friends who make up his race team.

McGuire says, "We run a limited schedule due to budget. It's nice to venture out to tracks like where I hope to race one day."

VIR is road course track owned by Connie Nyholm. She's excited to have the NASCAR K&N 125 Biscuitville race in town.

Nyholm says, "It wouldn't happen without sponsorship it's just that simple. It is a very expensive sport."

McGuire explains, "It is a different style racing technique. A lot of thought process is going through your head because there's more than one turn."

Instead of one turn Michael and the other drivers will have at least twenty at The North Course track of VIR. The raceway has two tracks and employs 300 people. Nyholm hopes that will continue to grow.

She says, "Our long-term goal at VIR is to produce more racing."

This weekend's event is certainly a good start.

Michael McGuire is Karen's husband's cousin.  We wish him and all of the folks at VIR the best.
