14-foot shark caught off N. Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -

Here's a real fish story - a 14-foot, 700-pound tiger shark caught off North Myrtle Beach.

The giant shark was caught last Saturday when six Marines from Camp LeJeune took a charter boat to go shark fishing while on a bachelor party.

Capt. Richard Long Jr. says the mate and the Marines in the 43-foot boat spotted the shark about three miles offshore in about 35 feet of water. Long says they looped a rope around its tail and dragged it backward until the shark drowned. Long says he's never seen anyone pull in a shark that big.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports tiger sharks are one of the top three types of sharks involved in unprovoked fatal shark attacks.

On Aug. 22, fishermen caught two bull sharks at the mouth of the Potomac River in Maryland about 200 yards from a spot where people had been swimming.

John "Willy" Dean caught the 8-foot, male sharks weighing about 220 pounds each in nets on Tuesday near Point Lookout State Park where the Potomac meets Chesapeake Bay. The catch comes three years after Dean captured the first bull shark recorded in the Potomac in 37 years.

The first shark had drowned while caught in the net. The second was alive and thrashing when hauled on board by Dean and three other fishermen.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fact sheet says bull sharks live off the Atlantic coast and are common in lagoons, bays and river mouths. They can be found where fresh water meets salt water.
