Nash Co. sets up food distribution for hundreds with delayed food benefits

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, N.C. -

A massive line of people facing delays in their food benefits came out to a food distribution on Saturday in Nash County.

The Department of Social Services in Nash County teamed up with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to provide the food.

Hundreds of people across N.C. are still not getting their food benefits on time. It's a problem that started when the state switched to the new NC FAST system for processing these benefits.

People started lining up around 3:30 a.m. The line eventually wrapped around the DSS building. The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina provided 10 pallets of food and water.

Some people have gone three months without food benefits.

"We only get $78, that's what we live off of. It's hard and there are people out here worse off than me," said one person who received food.

The state said the NC FAST system works, but with any new technology there will be glitches. They say they're working on fixing the problems.

But for those struggling to eat, they say they just want to know when.

"I can't give a definitive answer to that," explained Melvia Batts, Director of DSS of Nash County.

Batts said the department is doing anything they can to help the people affected until the problems are fixed.

"We want them to know we do care and we are concerned when we are not able to get benefits to them in a timely manner," said Batts "We are accessing every in order to help them have food on their table."

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina relies on donations to feed communities. You can learn more about them here. You can learn more about the NC FAST system here.
