Roanoke Autism Awareness Extravaganza

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

Hundreds of people headed to Roanoke this afternoon for Project Lifesaver and Autism Awareness Extravaganza.

The event gives families in the community a chance fro kids to come have fun while their parents gain access to helpful tools, like Project Lifesaver. It uses technology to assist caregivers of people who suffer with mental disorders, such as autism or downs syndrome. It allows them to find their loved ones if they are lost.

"We wanted to make it an atmosphere where we're providing resources and services to the families while also giving an opportunity for all of the individuals on the spectrum to interactive positively with emergency personnel," says public safety training coordinator, Didi Zaryzzny.

"They need to know they can trust the police department," says Officer Travis Akins with Roanoke City Police. "We are educating our officers on special needs situations. That's extremely important."

An important learning event for the community that will likely continue in years to come.
