Roanoke City Firefighters Association partners with West End Center

ROANOKE -

The Roanoke City Fire Fighters Association is giving kids a safe place to play.

West End Center just started using the empty field next to Roanoke Local 1132 on Patterson Avenue to play soccer.

West End Program Director, Danny Britton says, "It is a much larger space than what we have at the center."

Britton used to play professional soccer but says the sport does more than give the kids physical activity.

He says, "It also exercises the mind.  Hand eye coordination and fast decision making are key parts of the sport."

The long term goals are to add tennis courts and basketball hoops in the parking lot.

Roanoke City Firefighter, Ben Sweeney says, "It is nice to see the field get some use. One of the best parts about being a firefighter is to help out in the community."

West End hopes this is a partnership that lasts.
