Board of Supervisors to discuss Stellar One Lease

The Board of Supervisors will meet today at 3pm.

One of the items on today's agenda is a request from Stellar One Bank on East Main Street in Salem to terminate it's lease early.

The board will also discuss allowing the bank to keep an ATM at that location.

The Roanoke County Department of Social Services could benefit from the early termination of the lease.

It was determined a year ago that the department needed more space. Since 2007, their caseload has increased substantially. SNAP caseloads are up 96% and Medicaid caseloads are up 46%.

The county has been researching different ways to expand. Assistant County Administrator, Richard Caywood, says the county considered building a whole new facility. The Department of Social Services is currently located in the upper floors of the building which is owned by the county. He says that if the department could use the space currently leased by Stellar One, the department would not have to move.

He says, "We believe this will be a lower cost option if we try to make better use of the building that we already own and make some upgrades to it."

The building will be undergoing other renovations as part of Roanoke County's Capitol Improvement Program. That project costs three million dollars and the funds for those renovations have already been set aside by the board. According to Roanoke County's Director of Finance, Rebecca Owens, the money for downstairs renovations will come from revenue the building makes from it's other tenants.

Caywood says there is no set date on when construction will begin, but he hopes it will begin by next spring.
