Botetourt, Roanoke Co to join push for broadband

Posted: Updated:
BOTETOURT COUNTY -

Two more counties will take action today in the push for broadband.

Botetourt and Roanoke County both have public hearings tonight as they work to be part of the proposed Roanoke Valley Broadband Authority. The joint effort could potentially help lower the cost for installing infrastructure and ultimately bring affordable high speed access to more homes.

Roanoke voted in support of the plan last week. The authority gained support from Salem Monday although city council decided to table the vote until the remaining two localities hold their public hearing. "If we had this broadband authority and someone else had the infrastructure than perhaps we would introduce more competition into the market, perhaps provide better service and drive down the cost," said Salem Mayor Randy Foley.

Botetourt County's hearing will take place at 3:00 p.m. following its regular meeting at the Greenfield Education & Training Center. Roanoke County will have its hearing during a 7:00 p.m. session.
