I-81 S remains closed

Posted: Updated:

I-81 S closures remain in place today.

Closures began Tuesday afternoon when VDOT determined the crack they had been working on since July was unstable. The crack is located on Christiansburg Mountain near mile marker 124.

Crews worked yesterday to remove material in hopes of stabilizing the slope, but were not able to remove enough to lift the closures.

There is no definite date for completion. The project could take up to 10 days.

Jamie Smith, spokesperson for VDOT, says there is no guarantee the project will be finished by the weekend. She says, "The hope is to get it open by Labor Day, but we cannot promise that. The work can take anywhere from a day or two up to ten days. So right now we are planning to have the lane closures in place for the labor day holiday."

Traffic is being redirected to Route 11 and 460.

Crews are back on scene today working to remove more material.
