Pilot dies in Danville plane crash

The pilot of a small plane has died after a fiery crash at the Danville Municipal Airport.

Virginia State police tell us the single-engine Piper Warrior plane crashed Thursday evening around 7:50 p.m.

Investigators say the plane was coming in for a landing at the airport when it made a sharp left and struck an ILS tower. After the impact, the plane crashed to the ground near the runway and caught fire. The plane was completely destroyed.

Police say the pilot, a man from Danville, died at the scene. No one else was on the plane.

The NTSB and the FAA have been notified of the crash.
