One of the tastiest festivals nationwide is coming to Roanoke this weekend for the first time.
BaconFest will make its debut downtown Saturday with 11 restaurants featuring different bacon concoctions, ranging from bacon wrapped hot dogs from Fork in the Market to bacon bagels from the Roanoke Bagel Shop.
Event coordinator Cassandra Williams said restaurants quickly jumped on board with the idea and she's expecting a big turnout from bacon lovers throughout Southwest Virginia.
"I get e-mails from fans or I see on our Facebook page different posts of how excited everybody is, and I remember how excited I was when I went to the bacon festival in upstate New York," Williams said. "I'm just thrilled to be able to bring this home to Roanoke."
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Commonwealth Autism Service.
Coordinator Heather Overstreet said the money will be spent on supporting education and research done by the autism service.
She admits it's an unlikely partnership.
"We do several community events though out the year, and this was something really outside of the box that we really had never participated in," Overstreet said. "We love bacon, so we said absolutely."
BaconFest runs Saturday from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. at Railside Plaza on Salem Avenue.
