One person killed during an attempted home invasion in Roanoke

Update:  2:30 p.m.

Roanoke Police have identified the person killed in a deadly home invasion attempt as 42-year-old Earnest Neal, Jr.

We'll have more on this story tonight on WSLS at 6 p.m.

The Roanoke City Police Department is continuing to investigate a home invasion overnight that led to one of the intruders being killed.

It happened Thursday night, just before midnight, in the 3000 block of Ferncliff Avenue.

Investigators say the one of the occupants inside the home shot one of the suspects in self-defense.

That suspect was found later by police a short distance from the home.

He was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police don't expect to bring any charges against the homeowner.

The name of the suspect killed in the attempted home invasion is expected to be released once next of kin is notified.
