Northside's marching band works out for football season

ROANOKE COUNTY, VA -

Tonight marks the official start of the high school football season, and the football players aren't the only ones who have been working hard to get ready for tonight's big game.

From new freshmen like Jamahl Savage to returning seniors like Anna Koel, it seems the entire band is excited for their first performance of the year.

"I'm most looking forward to playing their music," says Savage. "It's kind of cool, they have the rocking pop tunes."

"Whether we win or lose, the football team comes up and puts their helmets up," says Koel. "We're all kind of bonding as a whole school."

They've been working hard over the last month to get ready. To find out just how much work they've been putting in, students started wearing calorie tracking watches to measure their effort.

"We wanted to break it down, to see what we were doing during the course of the eight minute show," says band director, Tim Galyen. "And within that 8 minute show they burned about 160 calories."

Galyon says the band members ended up burning about 500 calories during just one 3 hour practice.

"A lot of people don't know the flutes you have to hold at a 90 degree angle and keep your head up and abs engaged. It doesn't seem like it'd be very difficult, but just waving your arms around being a drum major, it has a pattern and a beat," says Koel. "So if you're off the whole band's off, so it's a workout."

A workout the marching band hopes pays off when members get their big moment on the field tonight.
