VDOT says Interstate 81 southbound over Christiansburg Mountain will stay open during the labor day travel holiday, barring unforeseen problems.
The agency re-opened the detour at Dixie Caverns Thursday, after crews had removed enough debris from blasting to shore-up a 120-foot long crack on the mountain.
The contractor placed log trucks in-between the highway and the slope for additional protection from potential falling debris.
VDOT says additional blasting may take place in the next few weeks.
