Rocky Mount celebrates 140th anniversary

Posted: Updated:
ROCKY MOUNT, VA -

Folks in Rocky Mount danced the night away as they celebrated the towns 140th anniversary celebrating the day with live music performances downtown as a crowd of over four hundred people listened to the sounds of good music.

Mayor Steven Angle says music is a big part of Rocky Mounts heritage and they are turning that love into an economic driver for the town.

"There are a lot of musicians here in Franklin County so it was kind of a natural thing to try and build on," Angle said.

"So we have been very happy tonight being the first show, and it was free to the community to kind of get people out and vie them an introduction to some of the acts."

Acts like Franklin County based band "After Jack."

Music that got crowds up on their feet.

Assistant Town Manager Matthew Hankins says a good crowd response is promising to the future of the Harvester Center.

"This is one of the proof of concepts showing that we can do what we say we are going to do and attract people in to come and listen to music here in Rocky Mount," Hankins said.

He says its a way the town is going to revitalize and attract more business.

While the old hardware store may not look like much yet, the town of Rocky Mount is working to transform it into a center which will hold more than 500 people, and attract over 1000 people to the town a week.

The center will also have an event hall.

"If we can bring in an extra thousand or 1500 people in to our downtown in a given week that gives people a lot of incentive to open new restaurants and business," Hankins said.

It's a venture Rocky Mount has invested 2.2 Million dollars in and a lot of hard work. This all is expected to invest back into the town.
